On March 10, 2020, then-Governor Charlie Baker declared a COVID-19 state of emergency in Massachusetts, sending citizens of the state into a frenzy. The impact on congregate care settings was beyond belief, and our Higashi Health Department with its 18-member staff was forever turned upside down.
For the better part of the next few years, this courageous group of individuals was the glue that held us all together. They tested and tested and tested some more. They quarantined countless numbers of our students and communicated endlessly with our families and staff. Their days never seemed to end. Their heroic measures to keep over 450 students and staff safe and healthy were beyond remarkable.
Their time has come! The Higashi community is coming together on October 12th to celebrate the hard work of our Health Services team and raise money for renovations to a brand new space to be located on the first floor of the Magennis Building. The days of the old, cramped, and dark health rooms are nearing the end. With your support, we will double their space and create state-of-the-art exam rooms, treatment rooms, medication space and storage, a nurses station, waiting rooms, and ample recovery areas. We will be adding additional mental health space and ramp up our efforts to treat our students in a more holistic manner than ever imagined.
We will be much more than just a health services department. We will be a community hub for health and wellness. We will be a place to heal mind, body, and spirit. We will become a resource for all of our student’s health needs.
We are so grateful to the Higashi Health Care staff for their dedication and hard work. They are truly more than just health care professionals. They are our heroes.
Please join us at the 9th Annual Gala to support a new Health Services Initiative!
