On October 6th, we had a special visitor from New York. Her name is Setsu Goto. She is the mother of world-renowned violinists, Midori Goto and Ryu Goto.

Perhaps some of you already know about Midori’s debut performance at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony and Leonard Bernstein when she was 14 years old. She broke two strings and ended up playing three different violins (bigger than her real violin size) before the piece ended, never missing a note. The next day the New York Times carried this front-page headline: “Girl, 14, Conquers Tanglewood with 3 Violins.” Since then, she has been sharing her love of music with many audiences. She participates in many charitable activities such as visiting schools for children with different backgrounds all over the world.

Ryu Goto made his concert debut at the age of seven, playing all of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No.1 in Japan. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist on numerous international stages. He is currently a student at Harvard University.

The purpose of Mrs. Setsu Goto’s visit was to observe Higashi School in order to plan Midori and Ryu’s visit to Higashi for educational purposes and fundraising. Mrs. Goto was given a school tour followed by a meeting with Higashi music teachers. She observed various music classes and even participated by playing the tambourine with the Intermediate students. Mrs. Goto mentioned how happy they looked during the lesson. She discussed the importance of music education and hoped Higashi would continue to provide music education to all of the students while many schools have been reducing music education due to budget cuts. She is a determined person with a clear vision and compassion to serve people with physical and mental challenges with opportunities in music education.

In 1992, Midori founded Midori & Friends, a non-profit organization in New York, which brings music education programs to thousands of under-privileged children each year. In 2002 Midori established a non-profit organization called Music Sharing. Its mission is to bring music and performance of the highest caliber closer to the lives of young people of diverse backgrounds, to encourage them to fulfill their potential, and to train musicians and music professionals to work with young people to achieve these goals. Higashi is hoping that Midori, Ryu, and Mrs. Goto will bring this special opportunity to our students at Higashi as well.

I’d like to express my great gratitude to Yoshie Gordon for her diligent work to make this special visit happen; Deb Donovan, Mike Kelly, and Mrs. Ebi for conducting the wonderful tour for Mrs. Goto; Melissa Gartman for sharing her music lessons with her, and Tsuyoshi Oba for participating in the meeting with Mrs. Goto.
